3 - Application to relevant newsgroups/chat rooms

A newsgroup is a an online discussion forum. Traditionally, members post and reply to messages from other users of that newsgroup and receive the latest postings by email, not in 'real time' like chat rooms.Newsgroups are split into easily identified (by title) interest areas, which aids the targeted marketing products and services.

On the face of it, newsgroups seem to be a fantastic way to get the word out about your product or service or receive credible feedback about it from people with a genuine interest.

However, when marketing your products and services using newsgroups, caution is needed. Open advertising is frowned upon, and should be avoided. Upsetting certain members of the newsgroup can lead to you spending several hours downloading thousands of unpleasant email messages. To help avoid this, you may want to

  1. Pick the most relevant newsgroup to your product or website theme
  2. Study the newsgroup first (lurk) and cloak your campaign in the exchange of information and advice
  3. Gain the trust of other posters by providing valuable replies questions, or ask the opinions of other members of the group
  4. Include a 'signature' with all your posts (the details of who/where the post comes from).
  5. Set your name to the URL of your website or company name, thus raising awareness, driving traffic to your website and gaining brand leverage.
  6. Offer a free article which can be received via an auto responder

Chat rooms can provide another 'soft marketing approach'. Chat room Marketing is the use of online chat rooms to promote your product or service.

Like newsgroups, chat rooms are usually broken into categories, but unlike newsgroups, contributions occur in real time. To promote your products and services using this route, you may want to:

Chat rooms are more effective in communicating with young people than one way online advertising such as banners because they want interaction and not one way communication. Here are some more interesting points and tips about 'chat room marketing':

Having a live chat room on your website gives you the power to:

It's worth remembering that chat rooms have rules which should be adhered to. Chat rooms also use certain language and symbols which should be adopted, and use moderators to enforce the rules and/or influence the level of discussion. Some marketers believe that using newsgroups and chat rooms can be self-serving and not a genuinely useful or distinctive customer service because of bias.
